A new report from the National Safety Council (NSC) indicates that the number of car accidents caused by distracted drivers using their cell phones has been grossly underreported. The report indicates that 59 percent of the total number of fatal crashes involved cell phones, however researchers believe the number should be much higher. Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the NSC, reported that many factors contribute to the misinformation, from drivers not admitting to using their cell phones to a lack of consistency in reporting the accidents as caused by cell phones. The report brings to light the large difference in numbers reported by states. For example, Tennessee reported 93 fatal crashes caused by cell phone use, while in New York, a state with a much higher population, only reported 1.
