According to a recent report by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Colorado ranks 17th in the nation for injury-related deaths. Colorado has a fatal injury rate of 68 per 100,000 people. The national average is 58 fatal injuries per 100,000 people. The report analyzed many different causes of injury deaths, including car accidents, motorcycle accidents and traumatic brain injuries. Researchers ranked states according to ten safety criteria. Colorado passed in five categories: Ignition interlocks for all drunk driving offenders Booster seats mandatory for children 8 and under People in relationships can obtain protection orders Strong concussion law Prescription drug monitoring program This information is especially pertinent for this time of year. Teens will have many opportunities to drink in the next few weeks, which could lead to more dangerous roads because: Teens drink to excess. Most teenagers do not know how to pace themselves or just drink a little at parties. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), 23 percent of high school seniors habitually indulge in binge drinking. Alcohol hits young people harder. A woman drove through the front window of a Denver 7-Eleven convenience store last Wednesday. There were no injuries in the car accident, but the woman did slightly damage the exterior of the store and several items of merchandise inside the store. Her car was also seriously damaged. The woman said that she panicked when she crashed through the storefront window and accidentally slammed on the gas pedal instead of the breaks, sending her vehicle and the cash register to the back of the store. The clerk and a customer were inside the store when they heard the accident around 5 a.m. The accident was preceded by a similar Denver car accident two days prior.
